It is without a doubt that being coined the sexiest man in Mzansi is bound to make anyone chuffed. Zweli Dube is no different. Since being named the Sowetan Sexiest Man 2017, he has been appearing in every magazine baring almost all. The actor appears to be wearing his new status with pride.
“I won’t lie, it is a blessing to be appreciated and acknowledged. Internally, I would say there is a big smile,” he gushes to Blacklight.
As he arrives at the Bossonia Shopping Centre in the latest Audi sports car, blasting music, everyone instantly knows that a star has arrived in the building.
Decked in a black ensemble, made out of black jeans and a slim black shirt, which accentuate his ripped physique, and paired with designer shades – he truly is that guy that makes women gush and men envious.
But beyond the intimidating external and towering height lies another layer that the entertainer does not normally parade.
“I am quite an emotional being,” he reveals. “Believe it or not, behind these muscles there is a lot much of emotion in there.
“I know what sadness is, I know how it feels to be let down, and I know how it feels to cry.”
The Muvhango star, shares that two years ago he lost his sister to a heart attack. “It was one of the biggest trials in my life, where I had to deal with what they call true sadness and pain.
“I honestly thought it was never going to end. And even though I have healed, the pain is still there till this very day.”
I come from a single parent home and I am grateful that I had a mother who taught us how to pray and to have a relationship with God.
Zweli is known for his role as advocate Pule on the local TV soapie, Muvhango. He made his big acting debut as an actor on the famous Broadway show, The Lion King, playing the role of Scar. The role saw him performing in countries like Australia, Hong Kong and England.
The actor holds a strong demeanour that may appear aggressive or overly confident at times. However, once he lets his guard down, he reveals a more calm and charming layer.
“I think as a public figure it’s hard for us to show that [vulnerable] side because we have a responsibility to entertain people.
“When people see us they are looking for an escape and a sense of joy,” he explains.
Facing the dark cloud of losing his sister, Zweli says his spirituality always pulls him through any emotional turmoil.
“I come from a single-parent home and I am grateful that I had a mother who taught us how to pray and to have a relationship with God. I know it may sound cliché, but mina I go down on my knees and pray,” he adds.
“Some people go seek professional help but I have my relationship with God and he always comes through.
He continues: “There are certain things I am not comfortable talking about while I am going through them, even to my own girlfriend, but I know God always listens.
When his back is against the wall, the star says he is able to dig deep and find his inner strength.
“I don’t allow myself to stay in a dark place for a long time. I have this innate ability to allow myself to sob and be sad and then snap myself out of it.
“I am not afraid to look at myself in the mirror and ask, ‘Wait a minute, who are you? You were born for a reason, God brought you here for a reason, so stand up and keep moving,’ he says.
Zweli describes himself as a very playful soul, who easily fits in and is always excited to meet new people.
“My father once said to me: “When you meet someone there is one thing you both owe to one another, and that is to meet each halfway with respect,” he shares.
Despite acting, he has a deep love for singing, going to church and spending time with his family. And surprisingly, he also adds that he loves cooking and eating.
“I love food. People don’t understand, I eat and I eat and I eat,” he shares a rare giggle.
As for his future goals, apart from continuing to live a healthy and fit life, he hopes to bring home an Oscar or Golden Globe, one day. He says he has never been the type that is interested in easy routes.
“The Zweli Dube brand is not interested in quick cash. I don’t know how many gigs I have done for free because I understand the steps I need to take to get to where I want to be,” he explains.
“I wake up every day wanting to be better than I was yesterday. I am not interested in a quick buck; I am interested in a legacy, and a legacy comes with big rewards.”
